TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami underlined the need for respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Speaking in a meeting with his Syrian opposite number in Damascus on Sunday, the Iranian defense minister said preserving the Arab country’s territorial integrity will strengthen regional security because the security of regional countries is interconnected.

General Hatami under lined that the Islamic Republic has since the beginning opposed any idea or plan that entails disintegration of Syria.

He further congratulated Syria on the country’s victories over Takfiri terrorists and said full liberation of the Arab country will eliminate any pretexts for trans-regional countries to interfere in regional affairs.

Syria’s Defense Minister General Ali Abdullah Ayyoub, for his part, appreciated Iran’s support for the Syrian government and people in the fight against terrorism.

After the meeting, the two ministers attended a press conference.

Heading a ranking military delegation, General Hatami arrived in Damascus on Sunday morning for a two-day visit.

Since the outbreak of war and foreign militancy in Syria in 2011, Iran has stood by the Syrian government and supported its people against terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL).

In recent months, the Syrian army has managed to liberate many of the areas occupied by terrorists and has begun the reconstruction process.
